The Scenic South – What’s in a name?
Abbreviated by Cape Point, energized by the Storms of the `Fairest Cape in all the world”, the Scenic South at the south western extremity of the African continent is `scenic ' every sense of the word. The Far South Peninsula, or Scenic South as we prefer to call it, is our home. Using the connecting and information sharing technology of the internet, the Scenic South community website aims to connect all Our People, give a voice to Our Passions, and celebrate Our Pastimes to encourage a united, informed and active community.
Your positive active involvement will contribute to making Scenic South relevant and current.

About us:
Kim says:
I grew up in that other windy city, Port Elizabeth, with parents who loved the outdoors. As soon as I could swim, I accompanied my Dad on angling trips on his skiboat. I still tingle at memories of hanging overboard watching porpoises racing the bowwave. My Mom was an avid climber and we spent many happy weekends exploring the mountains and kloofs from the Cockscomb to Towerkop. Studying Environmental Science at UCT and working as an environmentalist was a natural progression for me. With the support of my husband, Chris and my children Anton and Claire, much of my life is still spent `protecting’ the natural environment, though I now work as a part-time consultant juggling family and work. Working with sea-paddling pal and creative friend Viv on the Scenic South website came at a time in my life when I wanted to re-create my `being’ as an environmentalist and to write more. Exploring the opportunities of the internet to find new ways to celebrate the magic of our natural environment, to inform people about the environmental challenges facing us and to link with pro-active initiatives that promote ecologically sustainable ways of living is all part of my new journey. Learning to manage the website, tweet unlike a chick and blog along has been a huge growing experience. At times it feels like I am riding on one of my childhood porpoises, the very next moment I am hanging from a jammed abseil devise – what ever the situation, the view is great!!!

Having grown up in Welkom, starved of the ocean and mountains, I relish living in the Scenic South! I feel so lucky to to be surrounded by these glorious mountains full of hiking trails, cycle tracks and breathtaking vistas, by two oceans inviting me to bodysurf, snorkel and kayak and by people who like me, do not feel compelled to dress to the nines when leaving home!I gave up my career as a high school English and Guidance teacher when our son Bjorn started poking his tiny elbows and knees into my tummy and thereafter enjoyed being at home with him and his brothers Chris and Karl who followed him into this world, getting involved in a variety of small home-based business ventures to maintain my sanity and feed my desire for “big” people contact! Fifteen years ago I trained as a hatha yoga teacher and have been teaching from my home studio since then, loving the teaching and my inspiring and great hearted students. A 4-year foray into the business world in a field foreign to all my experience and my nature may have etched “character lines” on my face and highlighted my hair somewhat silvery, but I learnt skills and became involved in projects that I would never otherwise have considered. One of the projects I thoroughly enjoyed was the creating and publishing of my annual community booklets “The Scenic South in Focus” out of which this website has grown.
Kim and I met through a mutual friend when my youngest son, Karl and her eldest, Anton, were small babies, more than 18 years ago. Our families became close, sharing the same values and outlook on life as well as sporting interests. Apart from growing out of the booklets, www.scenicsouth.co.za also grew out of our shared passion for Fish Hoek and the scenic South Peninsula, a desire to do our bit to help connect the diverse communities living here and to spread the message of healthy, green, sustainable and conscious living.
Our “technical support team” deserves mention. My long-suffering husband Harry, who has a love for things technical and incomprehensible and challenging – has done a great deal to rescue us when we have become almost purple with perplexity and explosive with exasperation – neither Kim nor I being fundies behind the computer. And Janine Meyer from Bounce Design, our ever supportive web designer, deserves accolades for her patience in fixing pages “gone wonky”, finding posts “gone missing” and tutoring us in the technicalities of this awesome technology.
