The world cup is around the corner. Please keep the Kanana soccer club in mind when talking to friends and family in the soccer spirit. There is a small but special soccer club at the bottom end of Masiphumelele. In spite of the Zenophobia in many of the townships, Kanana soccer club consciously accepted non-South African members in their team in an initiative that has them setting a positve example across Cape Town for their inclusive approach.
Kanana Football Club was established by residents of Kanana Street including the street committee. Currently 25 members ranging from 14 to 26 yrs train in the week between 5 and 7:30 pm at the field in Fish Eagle Park, Kommetjie Rd. The team members are mostly students or unemployed youth. Some are non-South African residents. In the words of chairman, Thembelani Dumo: “It is precisely because of the challenges that we face in our township that our football club activities have great values and benefits in our community. Our township youth live in a place where, if you are not determined enough to achieve your goal, it is so easy to be drawn to criminal activities or a sense of hopelessness. ”
Last year Work for Love helped the team get registered as a soccer club. The players have been amazing, managing to stay fit and well and making do with very little, even without a soccer ball at times. The most urgent right now is 4 soccer balls. You might have one lying around at home? For more info read Kanana Soccer Club proposal for support.
Thanks for taking the time to read this.
